South Korea: Tons of mushrooms destroyed in facility fire

A fire broke out early on the 28th at a mushroom farm in Jinju, Gyeongnam, prompting firefighting authorities to begin extinguishing operations. According to the Fire Headquarters, a report was received around 12:13 a.m. on the same day that a fire had broken out at a mushroom farm located in Jeongjari, Geumgok-myeon, Jinju City, Gyeongnam.

Upon the fire, the firefighting authorities escalated beyond Response Level 1, which involves dispatching all personnel from the responsible fire station, and issued Response Level 2 at 12:43 a.m., mobilizing personnel and equipment from five to six adjacent fire stations. A total of 97 personnel, including firefighters and police officers, and 35 pieces of equipment, including fire trucks, were deployed to the scene to conduct extinguishing operations.

After intensive extinguishing efforts, the response level was downgraded to Level 1 at 1:17 a.m., and the response level was lifted at 2:34 a.m. By 4:20 a.m., the major flames had been contained. The firefighting authorities used excavators to overturn debris and clear remaining embers. The fire was completely extinguished around 7:16 a.m., seven hours after the outbreak.

There were no casualties from this fire. However, two buildings, including a 1,700-square-meter mushroom cultivation facility, were burned. Additionally, approximately 5 tons of oyster mushrooms being cultivated there are estimated to have been burned or lost.
