Cllr Schwier, Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, and Cllr Massey, Deputy Cabinet Member, visited the University of Essex where they were able to learn more about how robots are being used to improve efficiency in farming practices.
The robots have been developed at Versatile RobotX, based at the University's knowledge gateway. They have previously been tested at local farming businesses and can perform various labour-intensive tasks such as harvesting fruit and vegetables. By reducing the need for labour intensive tasks, it can support challenges such as labour shortages in farming.

During the tour, Cllr Schwier and Cllr Massey were also able to see the innovative Smart Technology Experimental Facility Suite STEPS facility at the University of Essex. The lab has been established as part of the university's commitment to respond to food scarcity and research how to grow crops in an increasingly changing climate.
