Eritrea calls for more hydroponic, aquaponic systems for sustainable fodder production

Mr. Mehari Woldebruk, a livestock development expert in the Mendefera sub-zone, has called on farmers to introduce hydroponic and aquaponic farming system to ensure sustainable animal fodder production.

Mr. Mehari stated that hydroponic and aquaponic farming system save energy and water, is simple to produce, and play a significant role in the development of dairy production. He noted that the system can make a substantial contribution to livestock and poultry development.

Citing an exemplary farmer from the Adi-Mengonti administrative area, Ms. Etsegenet Okbai, who has successfully applied the hydroponic and aquaponic farming system to enhance her dairy and poultry production, Mr. Mehari urged farmers in the area to follow her initiative.

Ms. Etsegenet indicated that seven kilograms of green animal fodder can be produced from one kilogram of seeds by applying the farming system.
