Philippines: IPPF eyes mushroom production program for inmates

The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) is exploring the rollout of a Mushroom Production Program as part of efforts to expand sustainable livelihood opportunities for persons deprived of liberty (PDL).

A consultative meeting was held on February 20, at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority – Puerto Princesa School of Arts and Trades (TESDA–PPSAT) to discuss the proposed program's registration and compliance requirements under the Unified Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system.

Representatives from IPPF's External Affairs Section, along with CO1 Jason Lampago, a certified trainer for mushroom production, met with Assistant Professor III Shiara Ku T. Conde, who handles external linkages and partnership under the Unified TVET Program Registration and Accreditation System (UTPRAS).

The discussion centered on the feasibility of offering Mushroom Production under UTPRAS, including documentary requirements, training regulations, facilities and equipment standards, and trainer qualifications. Technical components of mushroom production—from substrate preparation to post-harvest handling—were also outlined during the meeting.
