Oishii has introduced a new stay-fresh top-seal packaging format for its Nikko Berry strawberries, which will begin rolling out to grocery stores in March. The company says the new 7.5-ounce pack is designed to extend freshness, reduce plastic use, and improve product protection compared with conventional strawberry packaging.
The updated format will be previewed at Natural Products Expo West before appearing on retail shelves later this month.

Packaging redesign for freshness and reduced plastic use
The new packaging replaces the traditional plastic clamshell with a cardboard tray topped by a lightweight seal. According to Oishii, the design reduces plastic use by more than 80 percent compared with most strawberry packaging currently used in the market.
The company says the new pack also improves protection during transport and handling while maintaining berry quality for a longer period. "This new pack represents the next phase of value, bringing better protection and a more efficient format to consumers at an accessible price point," the company stated.
The packaging is also intended to create a cleaner retail presentation and reduce material use while supporting the company's goal of modernizing fresh produce packaging.

Introducing a ten-day freshness guarantee
The launch also introduces a new freshness guarantee printed directly on the packaging. The program offers a ten-day promise from harvest, with customers encouraged to contact the company if the berries do not meet expected quality standards.
Oishii says the guarantee reflects confidence in its controlled growing environment, where strawberries are cultivated indoors using pesticide-free methods and harvested at peak ripeness.
The company's strawberries are grown in indoor smart farms that control environmental factors such as light, temperature, humidity, and airflow. Pollination is carried out naturally by bees inside the growing environment.

Retail rollout across several regions
The new Nikko Berry packaging will begin appearing at retailers in March with the following pricing:
FreshDirect (Northeast, direct-to-consumer): $7.99
Sprouts (Philadelphia and DMV regions): $7.99
Central Market (Texas): $8.99
Roche Bros (Boston metro area): $8.99
The Nikko Berry was introduced in 2025 as Oishii's third strawberry varietal. The company describes it as its most abundant and accessible product, developed to bring premium indoor-grown strawberries to a broader group of consumers.
