Scottish community mushroom farm launches in converted building at Dornoch Hub

A new community project focused on sustainable food growing has opened in Dornoch and is seeking local volunteers to get involved. 'Highland Fun Guys', a social enterprise run by the Dornoch Firth Group SCIO, is launching a Community Mushroom Farm at the Dornoch Hub.

The initiative aims to give residents hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation while promoting environmentally friendly growing methods. The project has converted a windowless, unused building at the Dornoch Hub into a dedicated mushroom growing space. Organisers say the setting is well suited to mushroom production and allows the project to operate with minimal environmental impact.

The venture has been supported through a rent-free arrangement with Dornoch Area Community Interest Company (DACIC). Startup funding has also been provided by The Pebble Trust. In addition, expert guidance has been supplied by Rhyze Mushrooms, a charity based in Edinburgh that specialises in mushroom growing and training.

Organisers say the farm will focus on organic growing methods and waste reduction. The project aims to operate as a closed-loop system. Spent mushroom substrate - leftover organic material - will be composted using a wormery, producing compost that can be reused or sold locally.
