India: Embryonic Greens shaping urban farming through hydroponics

Meet Mohit Nijhawan, the founder of Embryonic Greens, which is shaping urban farming through hydroponics. From rooftop beginnings to a thriving commercial farm, Mohit’s journey reflects resilience and a greener, healthier future.

"I’m Mohit Nijhawan, an unconventional urban farmer with a mission to positively impact the health of Indians. I serve as the CEO and founder of Embryonic Greens. After years in the healthcare and biotech sectors, I decided to offer affordable, healthy food to the masses, which led me to introduce indoor hydroponic farming in India. I graduated from Panjab University and pursued an MBA from IMT Ghaziabad. With over 22 years of experience in pharmaceuticals, spanning leadership roles in business development, research, market access, and product launches, I transitioned to hydroponic farming in Mohali," he said.

"Vegetables, often dubbed protective foods, hold significant nutritive and medicinal value, crucial for nutritional security. Unfortunately, the scarcity of fresh, pesticide-free vegetables is increasingly concerning in our country. Personally, the loss of my mother-in-law to cancer and my sister-in-law to kidney failure despite my close involvement in medicine was a catalyst. Lifestyle-related ailments like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are on the rise due to imbalanced diets, and these diseases are not coincidental; they stem from choices. Starting in 2021, my primary goal was to introduce protective foods, envisioning a Chandigarh city as a “blue zone” where longevity and health thrive. Our mission is to harmonize human needs with innovative ways to enhance and elongate lives, ensuring affordable, fresh, attractive, nutritious, and contaminant-free food for all."

"In just one year since our formal launch on May 7, 2022, we’ve garnered a substantial customer base. But our vision extends further, aiming to expand our impact to the central, south, east, and west regions of India. Positive customer feedback propels us, and we’re broadening our market presence to neighboring states such as Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and New Delhi. Our commitment to innovation remains strong, continuously exploring new varieties, cultivation techniques, and advancements to enhance the quality and efficiency of Microgreens production."
