Swegreen fully operationalizes its largest store grow facility

Swegreen has launched and fully operationalized its largest store grow facility at Maxi ICA Stormarknad Ängelholm.

The vertical farming facility gives ICA Maxi Ängelholm the opportunity to harvest just over 160,000 plants annually, with minimal resource utilization – 99% less water consumption, zero pesticides and radically reduced transportation costs. The vegetables and herbs are grown directly in the store, which means they are always fresh when purchased and free from long distribution chains.

For grocery retailers, Swegreen's store cultivation is a commercially attractive solution that both strengthens the store's sustainability profile and increases sales through a differentiated and premium experience for the customer.

"This is more than a sustainability investment – it is a business game-changer for the grocery retail industry," says Pierre Mohlin, Partner at Swegreen. "Our solution shows that the retail of the future can be both profitable and climate-smart."

Capital market interest in future food production
Investments in hyperlocal and resource-efficient food production have increased significantly in the global capital market. Swegreen's technology platform, now scalable and commercially proven in a retail environment, opens up new opportunities for venture capital and institutional investors to position themselves in the fast-growing segment of agritech and vertical farming.

The fact that four major ICA retailers chose to extend their partnerships by up to five years in the fall of 2024 proves that our technology works on a large scale and can be integrated into the grocery retail sector, continues Pierre Mohlin. We see strong demand from both retailers and investors who want to be part of the next big shift in the food sector.

ICA Maxi Ängelholm is taking a big step into the future of grocery retail by launching the country's largest store grow with Swegreen's vertical farming technology. Store manager Sebastian Damréus sees major advantages: "Having the farm fully operational is a milestone. We can offer our customers the freshest and most sustainable vegetables on the market, while reducing our carbon footprint and purchasing costs. This is the future, and we are proud to be at the forefront."
