CAN: Food banks tour hydroponic systems at Red Deer Food Bank

Last week, food bank staff from around Alberta learned how hydroponic systems at Red Deer Food Bank are producing vegetables to help feed its clients. Tours were held in conjunction with Food Bank Alberta's annual convention at Red Deer Resort & Casino.

"Red Deer Food Bank is an amazing example of a food bank that's really innovating and trying to make the best use of their resources," said Shawna Bissell, Food Banks Alberta executive director.

She said while Edmonton and Calgary have the largest food banks in Alberta, Red Deer's operation is also considered to be large in terms of people served so it has innovated to meet the need. The convention is an opportunity to share ideas, best practices and innovations, and the hydroponics at Red Deer Food Bank is new to many.

"In some of our smaller communities, we still have food banks operating out of church basements. So there's a very diverse way of food banking in the province."
