US (WI): Hydroponic using school nutritionist wins award

When Jennifer Walters was told her hydroponic farms in the Winona Senior High School's cafeteria were leaking at the same moment the band was preparing for a concert, she rushed off to deal with the issue. But Walters, director of nutrition at Winona Area Public Schools, quickly learned the leak wasn't real. Instead, she was in for a big surprise.

"I go running out to the farm, and the band was playing, and they did this big, huge tribute for me," Walters said. "It was awesome."

In that moment, Walters learned she was the Minnesota School Nutrition Association's 2025 director of the year. "I was like on cloud nine," Walters said.

Walters' 16-year-old daughter, Lily, who often spends time in her mother's office, said the honor was "well deserved."

"I see her work so hard, so I'm very glad that people are starting to recognize her," Lily said. "She's doing such a great job."
