Anthura is committed to innovating and researching vertical farming. This approach helps them create the best growing methods for their plant varieties while also exploring ways to make production and export more sustainable. "Imagine growing Phalaenopsis and Anthurium in a controlled environment, free from external conditions," says Marco van Herk, Commercial Director at Anthura. "With this method, our tropical plants could be grown sustainably even in desert regions."

Daylight-free cultivation in floriculture
Anthura began developing daylight-free cultivation cells in 2013. These cells allow precise control over growing conditions, unaffected by seasonal changes, enabling consistent cultivation in any climate. This is possible thanks to detailed cultivation plans. While vertical farming presents great opportunities for the floriculture industry, it also comes with challenges, such as high energy and construction costs. Additionally, different plants respond uniquely to the controlled conditions. By constantly refining their cultivation methods and monitoring every variable, Anthura has made significant progress in vertical farming.
Climate goals
Daylight-free cultivation benefits the environment, as highlighted by the ornamental plant breeder. "We can grow plants without using chemicals since fungi and pests can't enter the controlled environment. It also significantly reduces water usage, as there's no evaporation outside; only the water absorbed by the plant is used. This method is particularly useful in areas with limited water resources, presenting new opportunities for growing tropical crops. Plus, the circular reuse of water and nutrients enhances sustainability, as less water is needed and nutrients aren't washed away."
The next steps
Transitioning to large-scale daylight-free cultivation demands significant courage and investment. Initially, like LED lighting, it is costly but becomes more affordable as it scales up. Once a critical mass is achieved, costs can decrease, making daylight-free cultivation an attainable and sustainable option for the future.
To speed up the development and expansion of daylight-free cultivation, Anthura is seeking growers and investors interested in supporting this innovative approach. Collaboration and financial backing can make the technology more affordable and feasible for large-scale use.
