Pure Sprout Microgreens' Veronica Gomez:

“My identity informs my commitment to inclusivity and representation in agriculture"

From her backyard microgreens setup in Lilburn, Georgia, Veronica Gomez is quietly reshaping how people think about food. What started as a personal pivot from cardiac nursing has grown into a community-focused model for wellness, education, and sustainability.

At the heart of Pure Sprout Microgreens is a deceptively simple mission: help people grow healthier, live lighter, and eat closer to home. However, beneath that simplicity is a layered operation where every soil bag, educational kit, and composted trimming plays a role in something bigger.

Growing with care and purpose
Gomez cultivates her microgreens using a mix of ProMix (a blend of peat moss, perlite, and beneficial mycorrhizae) and organic coco coir, creating what she calls the "perfect environment" for vibrant, nutrient-rich growth. But sustainability doesn't stop at cultivation.

"Just like you care about where your food comes from, we care about how it's grown and what happens after," says Gomez. Any leftover soil or plant waste is composted or fed to what she calls her "very spoiled chickens." The aim is a closed-loop, minimal-waste system that supports her garden, and her values. "In the end, it's about growing food that's fresh, local, and responsibly made."

Bringing the farm into the classroom
Education has always been a central pillar of Pure Sprout. Gomez wants to show people, especially children, that growing food doesn't require farmland, green thumbs, or expensive tech. With that in mind, she's launching a new line of educational kits under the brand Sprout Lab, starting with a "Grow Your Own Kale Kit." The goal? To make home cultivation accessible and fun, while deepening awareness of where food comes from.

"At-home growing empowers individuals to take control of their nutrition," she says. "I want people to feel confident growing their own food, even if it's just on a windowsill." Collaborations with schools and community organizations are also in the works, aimed at integrating microgreens into STEM learning and local nutrition education programs.

Scaling with support
While the business remains small-scale by design, it hasn't gone unnoticed. Pure Sprout has received support from the USDA's Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crops (MASC) and participated in Hello Alice's Boost Camp, a program designed to help underrepresented small business owners scale sustainably.

"Programs like MASC have been instrumental in helping us improve operations and expand our reach," says Gomez. "They validate the work of small, sustainable farmers." She sees this type of support as crucial, especially for minority-owned farms in underserved regions. "My identity informs my commitment to inclusivity and representation in agriculture. I want others to see that sustainable farming is possible for them too."

A different kind of leadership
As a solo founder, Gomez wears every hat, from grower and educator to marketer and distributor. But her approach to leadership is rooted less in scale and more in service. "Leadership involves resilience, empathy, and adaptability," she says. "For me, it's about building strong relationships and staying true to our mission."

That mission now includes decentralizing food production, shortening supply chains, and building stronger ties between communities and the food they eat. "If I could redesign the food system in my community, I would start with education," she says. "We need more local farms, more food literacy, and more kids growing things with their hands."

A seed for the future
Looking ahead, Gomez envisions a larger space, part farm, part classroom, where families and students can learn, taste, and grow together. But for now, she measures success in much smaller ways.

"When someone tells me their child was excited to grow something at home, or a family starts adding microgreens to their meals, that's when I know it's working," she says.
