US (MS): Using aquaponics to grow fresh produce for a farmers market

Montrose Farmer's Marketeer Melissa Riney has been bringing Spring Water Produce LLC, to the Montrose Market for 5 years. Her produce includes fresh lettuce, kale, arugula, basil, swiss chard, collard greens, fresh herbs and plants. Her butterhead lettuce has become her best seller, as it is different from what you can get at the store.

It is interesting to learn that Spring Water Produce LLC is an aquaponics farm. All her vegetables are grown in water, using fertilizer from tilapia (fish) to grow them. Starting in 2016, Melissa and her family built their aquaponic system from the ground up. They now have 26 tanks of 70 tilapia and three 120 foot grow beds.

Melissa continues to bring her Spring Water Produce to the Montrose Farmer's Market because of the people.

The Montrose community is great and the volunteers are so helpful. Organizers are pleased Melissa continues to share their unique approach to growing produce with us at Montrose.
