A Guelph farm working to change Canada's food landscape is reaching new heights, in more ways than one. GoodLeaf is a fully automated vertical farm located in Guelph's industrial park that grows microgreens and babygreens year-round, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides.
It opened its first commercial farm and headquarters in Guelph about five years ago, working in collaboration with the University of Guelph, and has grown significantly ever since.
But really, it all started in 2011 after founder Gregg Curwin took a trip to Japan. Inspired by the impact of indoor farming he saw there, he decided to bring the concept to Canada, opening his first research and development facility in Nova Scotia back as a pilot farm to test the concept of commercial production.
"Gregg had a vision of what the future of leafy greens and fresh produce (could) look like in a country the size of Canada that only has one growing season," said GoodLeaf CMO Jeff Barlow.
