US (CO): Denver farm feeds families, and a nonprofit's budget

Farm work is hard work, and no joke. But it doesn't hurt to have a sense of humor while harvesting crops.

"I would say I'm a food nerd -- I didn't get this big looking at it," said Tommy Butler, the 6'3" farm manager of Altius Farms near downtown Denver.

Altius Farms is a 7,000-square-foot greenhouse of sorts, at the corner of 25th and Lawrence streets in Denver. A glance from the sidewalk below shows greens growing on columns in an indoor space perched atop the restaurant Uchi Denver. A look inside shows how Altius is a creative way Jewish Family Service helps the community -- and their bottom line.

"We're very fortunate to have several fancy pants restaurants that have this on their menu," Butler said, while pointing to a column of green and purple greens. Altius is one of Jewish Family Service's 30-plus programs. They serve the community through mental health counseling, housing help and food security. The greens Altius sells help make some green -- money they make currently goes back into the farm, with a goal of profit that will help fund JFS programs.
