Germany: Researchers trial vertical farming project in Saxony

Growing vegetables without arable land: Researchers from the TU Dresden and the UN Institute UNU-FLORES are testing at several locations in Saxony how vertical farming works in practice – and whether the method can contribute to regional supply in the future.

The VerFarming project is supported by the TU Dresden and the UN Institute UNU-FLORES. It is testing vegetable cultivation in vertical towers – without soil, but with nutrient solutions. The goal is to save water, space, and fertilizer. Partners in Dresden and Weißwasser, including daycare centers, companies, and research institutions, are actively involved. The project is funded by the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development.
