Mushrooms are magical — and not the kind you experimented with in the '70s. More than just food, fungi can be medicine, a stress reliever and a growing hobby taking root locally. At Boise Mushroom Company, a local shop that's part farm, part apothecary and part classroom — the owners are teaching Boise how to cook, grow and benefit from mushrooms' natural magic.
The rising trend of medicinal mushrooms blends natural wellness with ancient remedies that results in alternatives to pharmaceuticals for everything from anxiety and pain to inflammation and hormonal imbalances.
Boise Mushroom Company serves more than 80 rotating species of culinary mushrooms, like Shiitake and Lion's Mane, along with medicinal options such as capsules for anxiety, tinctures for hormone balance, lotions for pain relief, mushroom-based treats for pets and so much more. For those curious to grow their own at home, the shop also sells grow bags, colonized blocks and everything you need to do it yourself. In Idaho, where outdoor gardening is limited to a few months a year, indoor mushroom cultivation has become a popular hobby — especially in the winter.
"There's a new fascination with mushroom growing, people are really interested in the medicinal properties and health benefits from it," co-owner David Mitten said.
