US: Scalable vertical herb farm hits the market following relocation

A fully functional indoor vertical farm specializing in living herbs is now available for acquisition, following the relocation of operations from a 5,000-square-foot facility in Central California. Developed by Zeste Farms as a scalable prototype, the farm supplied major retailers, including Whole Foods and Albertsons, and demonstrated consistent daily output of between 2,000 and 2,500 plants.

"We built this as a prototype to prove the model at scale, and it did exactly that," said Stan Kaplita of Zeste Farms. "We hit breakeven at around 80% capacity, which is rare for vertical farms, especially in the fresh herb space."

The farm grew herbs live for retail, either for harvest at the store or sold in clamshell packaging. According to Stan, the system was designed to be modular, efficient, and adaptable to various market demands.

Although the business model proved sound, the Central California location ultimately posed challenges for long-term growth. "The region was highly competitive and the local market dynamics just weren't the right fit for expansion," he shares. "This move is a strategic relocation. But it's also a great opportunity for someone else to step in and run with a proven operation."

The complete farm system is being offered for $500,000. The sale includes a license to use Zeste Farms' proprietary growing systems, although intellectual property itself is not part of the transaction. Some additional investment will be required to install and requalify the system in its next home, but all terms are negotiable.

"This is a strong retail-ready model with real output and efficiency," he adds. "Whether you're an operator looking to expand or an investor exploring sustainable agriculture, it's a solid platform to build on."
