New Zealand: Putting down hydroponic roots in the country

Feeling like they were stuck between a rock and a hard place, Lisa and Tony Dale-Low chucked in their Wellington jobs, bought a house bus and spent two years travelling New Zealand with their three children.

"We weren't really sure what to do next, we just knew we wanted to stop what we were doing," Lisa said. They felt an urge to be in the country and produce something, and came across a business for sale in Manakau on the Horowhenua-Kāpiti boundary that seemed like a good opportunity.

It was growing lettuce and herbs under cover using hydroponics. The property was for sale as a going concern, and the owners stayed on to facilitate the transition to Lisa and Tony over a period of four weeks. "We knew we had a lot to learn, and seven years on we're still learning," Lisa said.

"But two of the staff came with the business, and we appreciated their knowledge and support. There were a few mistakes and wobbles along the way, and a pandemic thrown in there, but we're enjoying what we're doing."
