UK: A surfer's journey to building a thriving mushroom farm

The Devon farmers who grow or produce food for Riverford Organic Farmers talk about the highs and lows of working on the land. This month, Great British Life meets with Mic Eaton of Dart Valley Fungi.

Tell us a little about yourself, Mic:
I'm an exotic mushroom grower living in Devon. I was born and raised in Australia, where my youth was spent surfing and working in design. After years of travelling and establishing several entrepreneurial ventures, I found myself living in the UK.

Before moving here, I was studying in China, where plant medicine and mushrooms are woven deeply into health, culture, and cuisine. When I arrived in Devon, I discovered a thriving food community, and I wanted to be a part of that. I felt that a mushroom project would fit perfectly into that landscape, and so it began.

I soon realised there was potential to scale and collaborate. That's when my business partner, Luke Watson, joined me - and we've been on this journey ever since. It's been nearly six years, full of learning, travel, and growth. The fungal kingdom is endlessly fascinating, and the community that surrounds us is full of interesting characters.
