Dutch growers push saffron propagation indoors

On the island of Goeree-Overflakkee, John and Lenie Terhoeve grow crocus flowers to harvest one of the most valuable ingredients in the world: saffron. The Dutch TV program BinnensteBuiten visited them in the village of Oude-Tonge, and the episode aired last Friday (link in Dutch).

Outdoors, the propagation window for saffron crocuses lasts only a few weeks. By switching to protected propagation, the growers hope to produce flowers all year round. They have already begun experimenting with a daylight-free setup using LED lighting, although John admits that one major challenge is the cost of the lights.
