India: Sirsa teacher turns passion into award-winning mushroom venture

Jaswinder Singh, a young and progressive grower from Bhadolianwali village in Rania tehsil, has brought recognition to Sirsa district through his natural organic mushroom cultivation. He was recently honoured during the Kisan Diwas-2025 event at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, for his outstanding performance in organic mushroom (khumb) production, securing the top position in the district.

The university's Vice-Chancellor, Dr BR Kamboj, along with Dr Sushil Kumar Dhanda, Associate Director (Farm Advisory Services), and Dr Balwant Singh Mandal, Director of Extension Education, honoured Jaswinder with a certificate, memento and shawl. Dr Kamboj called Jaswinder an inspiration for young farmers and encouraged him to continue learning from university experts.

Local dignitaries, including mushroom specialist Dr Jagdeep Singh, senior scientist Dr DS Jakhar, Block Agriculture Officer Gurdeep Singh and village Sarpanch Gurpreet Singh, also congratulated him.

A teacher by profession, Jaswinder Singh holds an MA and JBT degree and works at a private school. He says his passion for natural farming started early, and during the Covid-19 lockdown, when work was disrupted, he decided to try mushroom cultivation. He began small, creating an 80x80 square feet mushroom plot at home, learning techniques from YouTube tutorials.
