US (VA): Grant helps WJCC schools launch Edible Education Garden program

Williamsburg-James City County Schools announced it received a $3,500 garden grant from Whole Kids, a program that is a part of Whole Foods Market Foundation. Through the grant, WJCC Schools said it is sowing seeds for an edible education program at the Restorative Center located at Lafayette High School.

WJCC Schools said the grant is "sprouting responsibility and interest in students" as they learn about edible gardening. Through the grant, students were able to plant garlic in their outdoor garden last fall, purchase and plant a hydroponic garden tower overflowing with produce, which began sprouting microgreens, according to the division.

"I am extremely thankful for our students to be actively involved in growing produce and learning about personal nutrition. As a result, our students at the Restorative Center have taken ownership of the time, talent, and care required to grow produce and manage its harvest. Most importantly, students are learning how to make healthier food choices," said Christopher C. Old, WJCC Schools Supervisor of Student Services and Non-Traditional Programs.
