US (OH): Students grow lettuce harvest in Bay Middle School cafeteria

It may look like something from sci-fi movie, but white standing pod is The Farm, growing lush, green lettuce in the Bay Middle School's cafeteria. The food is grown hydroponically meaning the roots are in water instead of solid. It's not just a science lesson, it's also lunch.

"It's really cool because we get to make the food that we eat," said 7th Grade student Elise Grodek. "We know what source it comes from. How fresh it is. Because we got to planted it."

Grodek enjoys gardening with her family, so she jumped at the chance to take part. Today's harvest will last about two weeks and will be used in chicken and side salads. Students are involved from the very beginning. After about two weeks under classroom grow lights, the sprouts are moved to "The Farm," where it takes roughly a month to fully grow. This is the project's second year. Not every crop is successful, but most are. And for this farm-to-table experience, it's more about learning than the food.

"They can take that, small scale what they're doing in the classroom, and they can understand farming a little bit more and soil and, and all those types of stem science connections," said McAndrews.
