US (GA): Students learn farm-to-table by harvesting lettuce in Putnam County school 'Hydrofarms'

Some Putnam County elementary students are learning to grow their own food by using "Hydrofarms". Putnam County Charter School System (PCSS) brought hands-on learning to the cafeteria.

Putnam County Charter School Nutrition Director Teena Carr and Elementary School Nutrition Manager JoAnn Baker showed students how lettuce is grown in their Hydrofarms. Students harvested the lettuce themselves for the following day's salad bar.

PCSS claims students growing their own food helps students understand where their meals come from and helps build lifelong healthy-eating habits. The organization also says it also empowers students to appreciate the work that goes into producing fresh foods and encourages them t make more nutritious decisions.

According to PCSS, "Farm-to-table doesn't get any fresher than this."
