For three generations, the Owens family has been involved in poultry, growing chickens for several major companies. "My parents have been in poultry industry for probably 35 to 40 years, maybe longer. I took over when my dad passed away," said Bill Owens.
The torch is being passed to his daughter, Amanda Owens, with plans to convert a chicken house into a hydroponics business. Ms. Owens, a licensed paramedic, has left her off-farm job and returned to the family farm where she's teaming up with her father for the newly launched A&B Indoor Farms.
"She is the future of all this, because I'm getting a little older," said Mr. Owens. "Chickens have been great for a lot of families, but it gets a lot more difficult the older you get. Younger people aren't wanting to jump into it."
"I am very excited," said Ms. Owens. "I'd just like to keep it going for our family and to make my dad proud. And who doesn't like working with their parents every day?"
