US: NY Sun Works applauds approval of climate education in K-12 public schools

Earlier this week, the New York Board of Regents approved an amendment to section 100.2 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education requiring instruction in climate education for public schools students in grades K-12. Implementation of the new requirement will begin in the 2027-2028 school year and will be phased-in through multiple years.

NY Sun Works Executive Director Manuela Zamora issued the following statement: "We applaud the New York State Board of Regents for making climate education a requirement for all K-12 students. Both students and teachers statewide overwhelmingly support an increased focus on climate education to achieve a greater understanding of the causes, impacts and solutions to climate change. It is our responsibility to prepare students to confront the challenges of our times, and science is our greatest tool.

"At NY Sun Works, we have partnered with NYC public schools for over a decade to provide hands-on, standards-aligned climate science education in K-12 classrooms. We have seen the effects of our Hydroponic Classrooms, proven curriculum and teacher training, as students become empowered stewards of the environment in their own communities. Students are not just meeting the standards, they are discovering the joy of learning science.

"We are thrilled to support the implementation of these new requirements, while addressing the popular demand for greater climate literacy. Special thanks to all members of the Climate and Resilience Education Task Force (CRETF) who worked to make this happen."
