US (TX): Laredo community garden uses 3D-printed hydroponic towers to grow fresh food

A community garden is using 3D-printed hydroponic towers to grow fresh food and help students thrive. The Laredo Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability is introducing a new type of gardening at the Canseco House Community Garden. The 3D-printed hydroponic tower grows plants using only water and added nutrients. The tower holds 15 pods, each growing a different plant.

Alejandra Aceves, director of Laredo Job Corps, said gardening has helped her students manage behavioral challenges and improve their mental health.

"They really enjoy going. They enjoy volunteering. They go two times a week for a few hours. It's important that my students belong to something where they're treated with dignity and respect, and they're learning," Aceves said.

Aceves said one young man with mental health challenges has become calmer and even started developing social skills. The Canseco House Garden is open to anyone in the community who wants to get involved.
