Who has not experienced it; just bought a salad in the supermarket, but due to the long transport routes and packaging, it is already a bit off when it gets to your home. With salads and herbs from &ever, this is very different, as these now grow directly in the supermarket and are freshly harvested at home!
A conscious diet is more than just a trend, it is part of everyday life for many nowadays. The Munich-based vertical farming company &ever contributes to this by producing nutrient-rich, flavorful and sustainable salads, herbs and cresses - but not just anywhere, but directly at the point of sale! But how does it work?
100% pesticide-free plants
Let's start at the beginning: For five years, the team around founder Mark Korzilius and CEO Dr. Henner Schwarz has been developing a facility for growing plants with a small footprint, in addition to the existing mega-farm technology. The goal was and is to produce 100% pesticide-free plants, independent of seasons and with 95% less water consumption, which can be used in many places.
The result is called "Grow Tower", behind which there is some highly developed tech. But this much can and should be revealed: The Grow Tower is a facility that grows healthy, nutrient-rich lettuces, herbs and cresses on four levels, to the exclusion of outside influences and using energy-efficient LED lights. The self-contained, fully air-conditioned system achieves yields of around 360 plants daily (that's up to 50kg).
And how does selling from the Grow Tower work?
Plants ready to be harvested automatically move outside the facility and are brought from the Grow Tower to the sales floor by employees. The plants are sold in small pots with intact roots, and the customer harvests them themselves at home. This is then reflected in full freshness and the exceptionally intense flavor when consumed. In addition, local cultivation reduces transport distances to a minimum.
Due to the small space requirement of just under 70m2, as well as low basic requirements, the Grow Tower can be placed in parking lots, courtyards or other distribution centers.
Grow Tower in use for the first time in Europe
In the newly opened EDEKA Stadler+Honner "Die Frisch-Nachbarn" in Unterföhring near Munich, &ever will now present the innovation in the field of vertical farming to end consumers from March 2021. "The fact that we can make our Grow Tower available to consumers for the first time after years of development and constant improvement, especially in Munich, the new location of our headquarters, naturally makes us very happy. We are convinced that we can offer many buyers absolute added value," says Dr. Henner Schwarz, CEO &ever.
