What began as a research project in Nova Scotia has turned into the country's largest vertical farmer, supplying 2,700 grocery stories, selling five million pounds of greens a year, and equipped with enough capacity to supply all of Canada.
GoodLeaf Community Farms Ltd. grows lettuce, baby greens and salad mixes at large indoor farms in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, with almost 300,000 square feet of growing space in total. Ryan Moore, brand ambassador, said the company's output isn't at maximum capacity, and there is plenty of room for growth.
"We don't have the restriction of space in the sense that we can build upward," he said. GoodLeaf's indoor growing facilities use vertical shelving, hydroponics and purple LED lights to grow produce in a controlled environment.
"If there are too many clouds or not enough rain, none of that affects our growth cycle," said Moore. Moore said GoodLeaf has the capability to supply the entire country if there is enough interest, instead of shipping produce in from Mexico, Argentina or California, where most of it currently originates.
