The Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera (RCKS), led by President Dr Richard A. Gontusan, is partnering with MRK Kemabong 2024 Douglas Lee, SMK Kemabong and Sabah Credit Corporation in launching an urban farming programme at SMK Kemabong. At the heart of this initiative is an indoor hydroponic project, designed to promote sustainable agriculture and spark interest among young people in modern farming techniques.
Douglas, in line with his MRK manifesto, deemed as the best manifesto for 2024, took a bold step by forming a student club, Kemabong Hydrosprouts, at the school to manage and maintain the hydroponic system, ensuring not only hands-on learning but also long-term sustainability. His proactive leadership reflects a clear vision: empowering youth to lead solutions to real-world challenges, including food security.
When Douglas approached RCKS to support this meaningful endeavour, they were delighted to come on board. They are especially grateful to Sabah Credit Corporation (SCC) for their generous sponsorship, which has made the project a reality. With strong collaboration among all stakeholders, they believe this initiative will leave a lasting impact on the community.
The launch ceremony took place on May 2 at SMK Kemabong. Eight members of RCKS attended to show their support. The event was officiated by Martinus Lunggeh, representing Datuk George Taitim Tulas, CEO of SCC. School principal Patrick Usit warmly welcomed the guests, acknowledged the importance of such partnerships in creating opportunities for students and expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders for selecting SMK Kemabong to host the project.
