CAN: Grower blends microgreens business with the flower industry

Two entrepreneurs are hoping a super food and cut flowers will make a perfect match for a homegrown business. Janine van Boxtel and Trang Vu are partners in the business Janine's Gardens. Their mission is to bring garden produce, with emphasis on the super food microgreens, to your kitchen.

Janine's Gardens attended the Brockville Farmers' Market with its new produce for the first time this weekend.

"I use high-quality Canadian organic soil and seeds. I grow them in an indoor regulated environment," said van Boxtel. The team is also growing cut flowers, which is Vu's passion. As the season arrives, they will have gladiolas, asters, daisies, zinnias, sunflowers and delphiniums to mention a few, as well as edible flowers such as borg, nasturtium, pansies and viola.

"I started gardening when we first came to Canada from the Netherlands in the 1970's. It was my job as a child to grow food for the family. I had more produce than the family needed, so I approached a local grocer. I was 11 and started to be a bit of an entrepreneur. We discovered that sweet corn was a big thing in Canada and so we started selling sweet corn."
