“We still see a lot of manual labor, which decreases production efficiency, producing inconsistent yields and increasing labor costs," the Yamato team says.
In the food processing industry, there are easy-to-damage, fragile, and sticky products that are difficult to weigh automatically. In reality, a fixed weight of such products is mostly packed manually by labor workers. Moreover, there are food factories with limited space which are not able to implement fully automatic systems.
Eliminating manual labor
“Vertical farming and hydroponics are exploding markets in the United States and Canada,” Yamato's spokesperson said. Therefore, the company is now introducing its newest product, specifically designed for this market. Named the TSD-N3, a mobile weighing and collating conveyor belt makes weighing herbs and leafy greens child's work compared to the manual process.

Due to increasing labor costs, the demand for automating the workplace is higher than ever. However, by implementing the TSD-N3, the customer can schedule precise cultivation processes, secure a stable production volume, and experience an improved yield,” the team continues.
“We saw the increasing labor costs and realized this could be done differently. With our TSD-N3, we believe we can improve efficiency and reduce the amount of manual labor,” the team of Yamato stated. Yamato is a Japanese-found global scale manufacturer of, amongst many products, leafy greens and herb weighing conveyor belts.
"With the new TSD-N3 series, we can not only ensure an increase in productivity and safety, but also contribute to sustainable processes. The system allows saving resources and limits the amount of waste a farm leaves behind.”
The weighing conveyors are easily operated as there is the option to connect the system to packaging machines for instance. By doing so, manual packaging, which is a labor-consuming process, can be eliminated.

Suitable for 'larger-sized greens' and extra mobile
Even more so, certain characteristics of herbs and leafy greens, such as long-stem herbs cannot easily be processed on multi-head combination scales, the Yamato team explained. The company's semi-automatic machine is well-suited for these.
In addition, the TSD-N3 series is equipped with caster wheels. This allows for extra mobility and the system can simply be plugged into the nearest socket to turn it on. As a result of using the system remotely from anywhere.
