US (OR): How a new hydroponics system is helping SLUG level up

Gardeners have many elements to consider when growing crops: the weather, using the right fertilizer and ensuring the right amount of water gets where it's needed. Eliminating the need for these steps can save hours of hard work, which is exactly what hydroponics is designed to do.

The Student Led Unity Garden (SLUG) introduced a new hydroponics system inside their greenhouse to grow crops during winter. Avery Weaver, SLUG's treasurer, says that the first of two major installments of the hydroponics system occurred on March 14, with no set date for the second installment.

"Our goal is to get to planting right away and to help get food for the coming growing season," Weaver said. The completed hydroponics system will consist of two rows of troughs running the length of the greenhouse, each being 163 inches long.

SLUG Media Director Brynn Hanna says that since the new system will allow them to grow more crops during more months, more fresh produce will be available for students year round. The system will also prevent root rot by making it easier to control fungus and bacteria, according to SLUG Secretary Mateus Chauvin.
